]]>Psalms 19: How clearly the sky reveals God's glory! How plainly it shows what he has done! Each day announces it to the following day; each night repeats it to the next. No speech or words are used, no sound is heard; yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth. God made a home in the sky for the sun; it comes out in the morning like a bridegroom, like an athlete eager to run a race. It starts at one end of the sky and goes across to the other. Nothing can hide from its heat.

To me the sky is God's canvas and he paints the sky with his amazing sunrises, sunsets and cloud formations. A painter can not imagine something as fascinating as some of the compositional elements of the sky. I try to do them justice by capturing them with my camera. So keep your head and spirits up and enjoy God's gallery.

]]>Cleveland,
located in northeast Ohio on Lake Erie, is the state's second-largest city and largest metropolitan area. It was founded in 1796 by and named after Moses Cleaveland, and incorporated as a city in 1836. The Ohio and Erie canals, railroad development and an abundance of natural resources (iron, oil), brought dramatic industrial growth to the new city; during the Civil war, Cleveland was an important supply center. The thriving factories of Cleveland attracted an influx of immigrants from Ireland, Germany and Eastern Europe. After World War I, Cleveland saw a rise in its African-American population; in 1967, Cleveland became the first major US city to elect an African-American mayor.
Like many of America's older industrial American cities, Cleveland withstood declining prosperity and loss of population in the second half of the 20th century. Recent re-investment in the downtown area (new stadiums for its sports teams, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, shopping arcades) has revitalized the city.
Residents of Cleveland are called "Clevelanders". Nicknames for the city include "The Forest City", "Metropolis of the Western Reserve", "Sixth City", "The Rock 'n' Roll Capital of the World", and "C-Town". Due to Lake Erie's close proximity to the city, the Cleveland area is sometimes locally referred to as "The North Coast".

]]>Shear Strength Cleveland is a photo project that incorporates Cleveland's past strength through industry that has long been overlooked. I try to capture in an abstract style the rustic geometric shapes of industry design-the mechanical muscle that once was the strength of Cleveland that is slowly turning to rusted steel. Using close-ups, dramatic lighting and different perspectives I try to capture the raw steel strength in artful compositions.

Like Cleveland, the steel girders are not shiny and new but the inner strength and history of Clevelanders is still in our core.

]]>"SHOOTIN' HOOPS" - Classic Hoop Collection

There is a story behind every backyard basketball hoop in America.

Nearly a decade ago, photographer David Liam Kyle began looking for those stories wherever he went. Today, Kyle – a former professional basketball player and nationally acclaimed photojournalist – has assembled those shots in his Classic Hoop Collection, an album containing outdoor backboards and rims attached to everything from weathered barns to ivy-strewn oak trees.

Tales of success, loss, redemption and togetherness are attached to every backboard. “I have discovered so many cool-looking hoops and so many amazing stories behind them,” says Kyle, who himself was an All-American
basketball player at Cleveland State University.

Kyle’s first backyard hoop photo was shot while he was on an unrelated newspaper assignment in Northeast Ohio. As he was walking up the back stairs to a house, he spotted an old, rusty rim and backboard attached to a shed. He had no reason to photograph it, other than that it was interesting.

“I grabbed a couple of shots and didn’t think much of it,” Kyle says. But when he examined the photos, Kyle – whose own love of the game can be traced to the outdoor hoop at his childhood home in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood – wanted to know more. So he went back to the house and talked to the homeowner, a man in his 80s.

“They had four boys, and the kids used to play for hours,” Kyle says. “They put up the hoop when the oldest son was about 12 years old. So you can imagine how much use this hoop saw over the years.”

Kyle’s collection includes hoops on playgrounds, in fields, on barns, on garages and even a few in gymnasiums. He admits favoring old-school “man-made” hoops over those that are prefabricated. Perhaps that comes from his own childhood experience, when he first learned to shoot at a hoop and backboard his oldest brother, Don, fashioned out of a bunch of leftover two-by-fours.

The hoop was functional, but not a thing of beauty. “My brother,” Kyle says with a
laugh, “was not particularly handy.”
